Jerry's Story

Jerry started experiencing mild shoulder pain over the summer that he assumed was a rotator cuff issue he had dealt with before. But by early December, an MRI raised concerns, and within days his condition rapidly declined. On his 62nd birthday, Jerry went into septic shock.

Doctors discovered he did not have cancer, but a severe joint infection that had entered his bloodstream, causing life-threatening sepsis. He was rushed into emergency surgery and placed in the ICU, where he remained sedated on a ventilator while powerful medications supported his blood pressure and organs. While these medications were required to save his life, they restricted blood flow to his extremities. His kidneys also experienced damage.

As the sepsis progressed, Jerry lost circulation to his hands, feet, and parts of his face. Slowly, his organs began to recover, he woke up, followed commands, and after nearly two weeks, was able to come off the ventilator. After more than a month without food, he passed his swallow test and enjoyed his first meal.

Despite every effort, the damage from septic shock was irreversible. Doctors determined that Jerry would need amputations. Over several surgeries, both legs and both hands were amputated. Through every procedure and painful recovery, Jerry showed extraordinary courage, strength, and faith.

Today, Jerry’s kidneys have fully recovered, and he is actively participating in rehabilitation. He is preparing to return home on Wednesday, February 18th, to begin the next chapter of recovery—learning new ways to live, adapt, and regain independence.
